Behold, what Manner of Love…

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” 1 John 3:1-2.

What love. What tender, beautiful love is being constanstly bestowed upon us. He calls us His sons and daughters. Daily we are faced with temptation, trials, etc. and oftentimes we cannot see how we can be like Jesus or be ready for His return. But the promise is, “it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

Christ bids us to follow Him. He does not lay before us all that lies around each bend or what is beyond each mountain climb, but He does lay out all He offers us. He tells first of how much He loves us and how He is so thankful for us. Then He tells how He gives peace in the storm. Strength when we are weak. How He shines light upon the dark paths. How He gives joy after mourning. He gives shelter in the storm. He gives comfort to the distressed. He provides an always listening ear and understanding heart. He is our Guide along the way. And when we do get lost, He will gently lead us back onto the right path. He gives patience and long-suffering. He restores our souls. He quiets our minds. He will be the light at night and our shade by day from the heat of trials and temptations. He is always ready to fight our battles for us if we let Him. He is the melody to life’s song. He is a strong shoulder to cry on. He is the ever faithful Friend. He wipes away tears and gives smiles. He never forces. He gives satisfaction and delight. He gives answers to life’s questions. He protects and provides all needs. He is the compass. He makes everything beautiful in His perfect time. He does not tell us what all lies ahead but He does tell us what He holds in His heart for each one of us and truly that is enough. Because we can rest safely in the arms of Jesus. Read the words of this hymn and let the words really sink in!

Under His Wings

Under His wings I am safely abiding.
Tho’ the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me.
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.

2 Under His wings – what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort and there I am blessed. [Refrain]

3 Under His wings – O what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore. [Refrain]

The Love that Changes Us

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall trubulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor prinicpalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:31,35,37-39.

God is on our side and He is greater then anything that we might be facing. Because He is for us and not against us, the pain that seems to shut Him out, has no weight to do that because He has said it can’t separate us from His love. The darkness that covers our souls at times and we feel like we can’t go on, it is weightless to enprison us because it can’t separate us from His love. I don’t think we will ever fully understand His for us. His love is so deep and He accepts us just as we are. And because of His love, we don’t stay in our broken state because His love parading our hearts transforms us. He places His pure, clean, white robe on us and smiles in joy as He unlocks the chains around our ankles and wrists and watches them fall to the ground. He gently lifts the burden off our shoulders and carries it on His own and takes our hand and leads us safely over the rugged way. He tells us of His love and it changes us. His love changes us. We realize even more of our ugly state without Him and long to be closer and closer to Him. Because He is who we want to become. We find life in His presence because He is our life. He places His life in us.

He is a breath of fresh air. He is a peaceful moment. He is joy after sorrow. He is freedom after bondage. He is sunshine after the storm. He is the balm to the wounds. He is the Healer to the pain. He is the heart protector. He is the peace after the turmoil. He is the “found” after being lost. He is the beautiful after the broken life. He is the best friend after betrayal. He is the comfort after fear. He is the love at the end of the broken road. He is the strong arms that carry us when we are too weak to walk. He is the song that makes our hearts sing. He is the strength to our weakness. He is the grace. He is forgiveness. He is mercy. He is the smile after the tears. He is the laughter after the pain. He is the strong arms. He is the shoulder to cry upon. He is the hidden treasure. He is the light in the darkness. He is the fulfillment of dreams. He is the satisfaction to our hungrying souls. He is the everlasting fountain, quenching our thirst. He is the definition of everything lovely. And it is His love that changes us. It is His love that springs up life in our hearts again.  Jesus is everything we could ever desire. Sometimes it takes the moments of our worst pain to realize how beautiful He is. Go to Jesus and find in Him everything you could ever seek for. He is the definition of perfection and He loves us so deeply! Seek His face and find life. Learn to live again in the strong embrace of our loving Saviour!

God will make a way…

God called the children of Israel out of Egypt to a far better place. They could not see the land from the beginning but God had promised. When it became hard they doubted and complained but God always made a way in the wilderness for His people. When Pharaoh and his army pursued them, they became fearful and complained to Moses, “Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egpty, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.” Ex. 14:11-12.

The children of Israel in time of danger doubted God’s call upon them. They would had rather remained in the “comfort” and the “known” of their lives in Egypt than face the unknown and trust in God’s protecting and guiding hand. It was easy for them to trust God when all was going well. Moses did not encourage the doubt but instead spoke faith calling the people to trust in God, stand still, and let Him move, “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which He will show you today: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.” vs. 13-14.

God gave Moses instructions to stretch out his rod and hand over the red sea but it wasn’t until the next day that he led the people across. Until it was the right time, God sent His angels to form a pillar of cloud of shade by day and a light during the night. All night God sent a east wind to blow back the water to make a dry path for the people to walk across. “And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.” Ex. 14:21-22. God provided a way of escape even when there seemed to be no way. All the people needed to do was trust in Him, stand still and let Him move and walk forward when He said it was time even if they did not see a way.

This story reveals God’s patience, love, and mercy. He gently worked and led the people. He provided a safe way through the water. It shows that hard times do not mean that God is not leading us. He has called us all to a better land. This world is like Egpty and our Christian walk is like the wilderness in a way. When the path of Christianity gets hard, we question if God realy called us and we are tempted to return to the ease of pleasure. When darkness hides His face from us, we question if He is still there and if He actually cares. But all along His hand is indeed guiding us. All along He is indeed making a way in the wilderness. Even in our darkest moments, He is there, faithfully working to make a way.

No amount of trials are evidence that God is not leading. The very fact that we experience hard times is evidence that He is because all the trials are designing us to be prepared for the better land, our Heavenly Home. God has called us into the unknown to follow Christ. Our journey may take us through beautiful meadows with flowers and birds, through raging storms, over mountain tops, through silent nights, through bright sunny days. But we can be assured that through it all, He is fighting the battle for us; therefore, we can stand in peace. Through it all His heart is composing our lives into beautiful songs that tell the most beautiful stories of who God is. We can trust Him knowing without a shadow of a doubt that He doeth all things well! When we can’t see His hand, let us constantly trust His heart for oh how He loves us!

God will make a way when there are no answers. Be still and know that He is God.

Called to Simply Love

She walked in and sat down in a chair at the door. I looked up from preparing for English and music class and greeted her with a smile and “Hola.” She replied, “Hola Teacher.” In her face was hurt and I could sense something was wrong so I asked her, “Está bien?” She shook her hand no and tears began to run down her face. I walked over to her and just wrapped her in a hug. As she cried on my shoulder, so much rose up in my heart that I wanted to say but I couldn’t. She spoke Spanish and I spoke English. I silently prayed asking God to help her and how I wished I could tell her what was in my heart. I wanted to do so much more than give her a hug and smile at her. I wanted to do more than pull her hair out of her face and give her another hug. But Jesus’ answer was clear, “Sabrina, I called you here to love. And in this moment you are doing exactly what I need you to do. It is okay that you don’t know much Spanish, you will learn, but in the meantime, I need you to just love.”

It had been about four weeks after arriving back at the school in Bolivia and my heart was a war. I questioned everything. I felt trapped in my own world, paralyzed to touch the lives of these children because I could not really talk to them. I began pushing for answers, for confirmation from God as to what He wanted me here for. It was clear He called me back but I needed reminded. His answer? To love. It was simple. It wasn’t some big task like I had originally thought He required of me. I am one of those persona that sets out to change the world but He answered seemed so simple. It was simply to love. A whole new world opened up to me. Jesus showed me exactly what to do and I found the freedom to show the love He put in my heart for each of these students.

Each day has found me falling more in love with everything about being here and I couldn’t have asked for a better fulfillment of my childhood dream. This isn’t Africa but this is exactly what I’ve prayed and dreamed about from since I can remember.

Always remember that sometimes we can think God sends us out to do a really big task but sometimes He simply wants us to forget about the things we think we can’t do because of some reason, and just simply love. Take a moment to give that student a hug and ask them how they are. Let them in front of you in the meal line. Jump in the creek with them. Let them laugh to their heart’s content during work time. Smile when they make a mistake and encourage them to try again.

I came here to be a teacher but I am actually a student. The life here, it has captured my heart forever. My life will never be the same. I have never felt like a really huggy person. I always preferred handshakes over hugs but being here, God has given me the ability to show love through lots of hugs.

Let the wind blow my hair, let the rain soak my clothes, let the storm rage on, but may I ever stand still and let God move.

I Stand Amazed

The valley no longer seemed like a low place
The mountain no longer seemed like a hard climb;
The storm no longer seemed hard to face
And waiting became a welcome find.

Like the very definition of freedom
Your hand guided me through each day;
I, often blind to see what was to come
Learned to cling to You like a boat at the bay.

Your love defined the very essence of perfection
You gave me satisfaction that left me speechless;
Your gentle words gave me a clear direction
And Your presence brought such sweetness.

Like the freshness in the air after a storm
Your peace filled each part of my heart;
Oh the many miracles You do perform
Where should I even begin to start?

You have defined my very existence
With each breath, with each heart beat;
You are fulfilling in me Your mission
Calling me to go to a dying world to reach.

And like a thousand neurons firing in my brain
I realize You have captured my heart forever;
And I must go, I must love, it’s You I must proclaim
Oh, oh, Jesus, I shall let You go never.

Thoughts and feelings crash together
Melodies and harmonies create a song;
This feeling of belonging cannot be measured
Indeed, Your hand hath been guiding me all along.

I stand amazed at who You are, Jesus dear
Send me anywhere, only go with me;
Lay on me any burden to patiently bear
Just only sustain me and keep me close to Thee.

The Great Composer

From beginning of time

You have been the greatest Artist;

Creating perfection into everything of Thine

And no good thing You have missed.

You have spread across the heavens

A delightful touch of purest joy;

You have placed in the mountains a safe haven

And the river’s melody to enjoy.

In all that You have touched, oh Lord

You have created a beautiful picture;

Reminding me of a better World

And my hope in You found sure.

In this, I am fully convinced

That each moment is Your time to shine;

As now and forever to Your will I submit

Truest happiness I will ever find.

With my life are You composing a beautiful song

Your leading is the sweet melody;

And trials and victories harmonize along

Creating a perfect reflection of Thee.

Oh sweet Jesus, have Thy perfect way

For someday I will turn around and know;

The reality of all that You did display

In the song of my life that You did compose.

If I Ever Marry…

Six months ago I began writing this poem but never finished. I stumbled across it tonight and finished off my thoughts of six months before. I say “If I ever marry” because Jesus is truly my dearest desire and I want His plan above my own.

If I ever marry…

It’ll be because Jesus wrote the story

I often wonder if the gift is planned for me

But I know that He is guiding my every step

He is writing my journey, my story.

If I ever marry…

He’ll be a man after God’s own heart

His lips touched by heaven’s due

He’ll know his purpose, his part

And surrounded by Christ’s life anew.

If I ever marry…

His shoulders will be broad and strong

Perhaps not physically…

But because he has learned to surrender

And he has let Christ teach him humility.

If I ever marry…

He will be a man that is tall and brave

Even if that is only when he is on his knees

He will be handsome because he gave

His whole life to Jesus for Him to lead.

If I ever marry…

He will be a man with a ready smile

And with a heart that loves children

A man always willing to go the extra mile

And every wrong to mend.

If I ever marry…

He will be a man with a tender heart

Full of compassion because Christ lives within

A man standing on the promises of God

And has found the victory from sin.

If I ever marry…

He will be a man that treasures his Bible

Letting Christ imprint His Word upon his mind

Teaching him self-denial

And living each day by Christ’s side.

If I ever marry…

He will be a man that is wealthy

Perhaps not by the definition of the world

But because he lays up treasure in Heaven

And has concentrated his life to the Lord.

If I ever marry…

Our lives will be joined to fill the call

To live our lives in the Lord’s service

To encourage when one falls

And praying for each other our daily purpose.
